This event has taken place in Shatto Recreation
Center, Los Angeles,
California. Baishakhi Mela committee has officially organized this event and
Uttoron president Dr. Hashem has organized its cultural show part, a joint
venture has made this event a successful one. This familiar event came back to
this venue after 2 consecutive years venue at Mac Arthur park and
Bangladeshi-American society members familiarity to this venue helped draw
a large audience particularly on the second evening.
Despite the repeated malfunctions of PA system, such as distorted sound and
'non-functioning' Floor Monitors on the first evening, the show was much successful,
particularly on the second evening. A 'Mela' was arranged by the committee,
which preceded cultural shows. Booths of Bangladeshi-American businesses and
organizations brought varieties of ethnic food, clothing, books and much more.
On the Saturday evening show, the event
started with National anthems of Bangladesh and United States. Children from
Uttoron and Uttoron Sangeet Academy and Bangla Pathshala has presented their
songs and dances which were very much delighting. Artists from Uttoron and
Uttoron Sangeet Academy participated in the cultural show for the major part of
the show. Both of the Uttoron group's performers presented their songs and
dances and other form of performances such as comedies and short drama. Among
the performers of both Uttoron groups were Major Kutubi and Emdadul Haque Bob, a
new singer has been introduced before the audience and presented their songs.
Some of the local artists also performed in this show. Distinguished solo song performers
Ria Hasan and Mahfuza Akhtar Shilpy has
presented their solo songs in this show as well as the director of Bangladesh Shikshakendra Abid
Razzaque. In this show members of AABEA and BDSAC has formally announced their upcoming
'Science and on-site Art Fair' to be held
on June 24th, 2007. Both founders of the Jalshaghar Entertainment, Dr. Shah Alam
and Khaleed Hossain have participated in this cultural event and presented their
solo Bengali modern songs. Roni Chowdhury presented his Nazrul and Shyama
Sangeet. Purnadas Baul of West Bengal has postponed his performance and
announced it to be held on the Sunday evening show. ATNBangla TV channel covered
the program.
On the Sunday evening show, a orange county
music band of young artists engaged the audience at the onset of the show.
Children from Uttoron and Uttoron Sangeet Academy, Bangla Pathshala and Gaaner
Mela has presented their eye-catching group children performance. A group of
artists from Arizona headed by prominent singer Mohammad Shoaib presented their
songs. As in Saturday, artists from Uttoron and Uttoron Sangeet Academy
participated in the cultural show for a good part of it. Both of the Uttoron
group's performers presented their songs and dances and other form of
performances such as comedies as a Melo-Drama. Among the performers of both
Uttoron groups Major Kutubi presented his duet songs along with Keyboardist
Shams. Geeta of Uttoron Sangeet Academy presented her Bharat Natyam dance. A fashion show was
arranged by a group of young enthusiasts of the Uttoron groups. Distinguished
guest from Bangladeshi-American community has attended this show. Among them
were, Mohammad Abu Zafar, Hon. Consul General of Los Angeles, Dr. Rafiquzzaman,
Dr. Zainal Abedin, Dr. Jilani Sadiq, Dr. Mahbub Khan, Mahfuzur Rahman, Chairman
of ATNBangla. ATNBangla TV channel covered the program along with STV TV
channel.
A few of the local artists also performed in
this show. Distinguished solo song performer Annie Jilani Sadiq offered her solo
song. Distinguished artist Mohammad Shoaib from Arizona has
presented his duet song with Mrs. Rezina. Mrs. Rezina also presented her solo
songs in this show. Although scheduled to perform, Dr. Shah Alam and Khaleed
Hossain of Jalshaghar Entertainment were not able to perform in this evening
show. Mrs. Eva Rahman of ATNBangla has presented her solo songs which kept
audience amused and heightened. Robi Chowdhury of Bangladesh presented his
songs. The show ended with heart-touching melodious songs by Purnadas Baul of
West Bengal, India.

The day was marked by a significant event
brochure, colorful parades, exhibits, recognitions, speeches, stalls of
Bangladeshi food and nativities and cultural programs with melodious songs,
drama and colorful dances, etc. The event took place in three distinct phases;
Parade:
Parade started at 2:30 PM on Harvard Blvd at 6th Street and ended at 3rd Street
at 3:30 PM. This has been first ever Parade in Los Angeles to celebrate the
Bangladesh Day with Joy, Pride, and resounding Glory. Harvard Blvd between
3rd Street and 6th Street was crowded by people from Bangladeshi-American
community and neighboring Korean community watching the colorful parade waving
Bangladeshi and American flags in their hands. The Los Angeles City Mayor
Antonio Villaraigosa has been in the parade along with other dignitaries. At
least 24 organizations from Bangladeshi-American community participated in the
parade with their beautiful banners.
Speech: This
part started with recitation from Al-Qur'an in Arabic, English and in Bangla. US
And Bangladeshi National anthems ensued immediately after the Qur'an recitation.
One beautiful dance was offered by members of Uttoron Sangeet Academy. Dr.
Mahbub Khan, Convener of BUFLA gave welcome address to the dignitaries and the
audience. Flowers offered by children to the dignitaries. The LA City Mayor
Antonio Villaraigosa offfered his speech to the audience and presented a LA City
office plaque to Dr. Mahbub Khan, BUFLA's Convener. The LA city Mayor also
officially announced Bangladesh Day which now became a tradition. California
State Board of Equalization member Judy Chu has also announced Bangladesh Day
Parade by resolution. Leads from all participating organizations together presented the BUFLA plaque to Antonio
Villaraigosa, the LA city Mayor. Glendale city Mayor, Congress elect Byron De
Lear, 2nd Consul General Nancy Bretzfield, Hon. Bangladesh Ambassador Shamsher
Mobin Chowdhury, Beer Uttam and many other dignitaries including senior elected
officials of the City of Los Angeles and suburban cities, Senators and members
of the US Congress and California State Assembly, business executives and other
distinguished citizens presented their speeches to the audience.
Cultural Program: The cultural
program was scripted by Dr. M. A. Hashem of Uttoron with close assistance by
Khaleed Hossain of Jalshaghar Entertainment. Dr. M. A. Hashem of Uttoron also
hosted the cultural with assistance of Shahadat Pappu of BDSAC. Unlike any other
cultural programs that took place in the past in and around Los Angeles, the
Bangladesh Day has offered a unique cultural show staged by 12
organizations. Each of the participating organizations arranged their own part
of show at their own expense and worked relentlessly to stage their part of show
as an excellent piece of presentation.

This program drew a striking number of
audiences. Distinguished local guest artist Mala Ganguly offered her classical
songs and songs of old days as well as Gazal of Mehdy Hasan. Rathindra Roy,
another Bangladeshi guest artist from New York has offered his solo songs. Jyoti
Prakash provided Tabla assistance to these 2 guest artists.
PA system was provided by Cosmos Sound & Stage
and worked fair with some malfunction.
